Former Georgia House Minority Leader and failed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams shared that she would auction a copy of her first romance novel to back Democratic candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. For just under a decade, Abrams wrote erotic romance novels under the pen name “Selena Montgomery.”
Abrams tweeted about her contribution to the runoff election on Wednesday. The funds raised from Abrams’ book will go to Romancing the Runoff, an initiative to raise money to back Warnock, Ossoff, and Democratic voting rights organizations.
“Thank you @RomancingRunoff for your amazing efforts. I’m privileged to be one of you. For the cause, I’d like to throw in an autographed copy of my first novel, Rules of Engagement, in the rare hardback version. Both Selena & Stacey will sign.”
The auction site lists Abrams’ book value as “priceless.”
This isn’t the first time Abrams’ romance novels caught the public’s eye – her smutty writing turned heads during her run for governor in 2018.
Abrams described her writing as “integral” to her identity. She added that her writing has prepared her for political leadership.
“Leadership requires the ability to engage and to create empathy for communities with disparate needs and ideas. Telling an effective story – especially in romantic suspense – demands a similar skill set. Effective storytelling takes the reader into a life that is both familiar and foreign, enough of both to make space for others to feel empowered to tell their stories.”
Abrams also founded Fair Fight PAC and Fair Fight Action, the latter a purported nonpartisan organization combating voter suppression by increasing registration and turnouts amongst minority and young voters. However, the homepage on the shared website for the two Fair Fight initiatives asks visitors to donate to help Democrats take back the Senate through Warnock and Ossoff.
Abrams founded Fair Fight following her 2018 loss against Governor Brian Kemp, after claiming that the election wasn’t fairly conducted.
Fair Fight is one of many Democratic organizations receiving funding from Win Both Seats, an initiative founded by presidential candidate Andrew Yang and a coalition of other activists.
Ahead of the Senate runoff election, Yang expressed his intentions to move to Georgia to help Democratic candidates Warnock and Ossoff. The activist clarified that he wouldn’t vote in the election, after other Democratic activists suggested that individuals exploit Georgia’s residency requirement laws by living there temporarily to vote for Warnock and Ossoff.
The top bid for Abrams’ book was $1,230 at the time of press.
